Hi - I've got a 12 min project with no transitions. The preview was working
fine until yesterday. Then did a seperate <2 min project and was able to
preview. But once I saved and reopened the same <2min project, I can't
preview either.

Any idea to get this to work...very frustrating.

No. Everything is there as it should. I can preview Titles as I edit
them...but from the storyboard...nope. Even when I click on pictures (a
slide show with no moving video) I they (or the end of the prior picture) do
not appear in the preview.

I hit the Play button, CTRL-W or Play from the storyboard, I get nada. The
only time the play button works is editing Titles

Maybe...and I'm only saying maybe....
it's possible that one or more of your
images is incompatible with Movie Maker.

It may be worth a try to create a smaller
project with a couple of .bmps just to see
if the problem persists.

they are all jpg's. but what's really strange is that i put one small video
clip in another project...added a title...and a transition and i'm getting
the same result. rather than trying to fix...is there a way to download
another version of Movie Maker and do the 'ole uninstall and reinstall?

If you read the article I posted you know
that .jpgs can cause issues...that is why
I suggested using .bmps.

Anyway...if you want to try a reinstall of
Movie Maker 2.1 you could download
and reinstall Windows XP SP2.

Download Windows XP SP2

Generally, users install from the net but this
site allows you to download the complete
file to your hard drive before installing.

It's good for a network administrator because
you can burn it on a CD and install it on as
many computers as you need to.

And it's good for a single machine because
if you ever need to install it again...you'll have
it available without waiting for a download.

Good luck.

John, I assume the OP has Vista with the reference to 6 in the title.
In which case he can't reinstall MM, but he may have joy by installing MM
2.6 for vista.

Same thing is happening to me. Windows Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba notebook version 6.06 Windows movie maker. I added a few transitions to a 3 minute movie and we went to watch the Seahawks win. When we returned, the movie would not play in the movie screen for editing. I could see clips that were not part of the movie but the movie would not show. I tried publishing the movie and that worked. It looked great in Windows media player. However, no editing is available now. Any suggestions on other products to use?

It could happen if you have installed or uninstall something from your
system. Have you installed something?

Other things to try is re-install directx and your graphics video card's
driver.

I don't recall installing anything else. However, I decided to try the 3 min
video on another computer that is also Vista and had Windows Movie Maker.
Surprisingly, some of the clips and slides showed up at first in the edit
window. I was missing some of the clips in a file called
"2007-10-2019.57.52.001 10/18/2007 2.48 PM". When I browsed to that file
location, the preview window went totally blank. That file also contained
other video clips in the show. So I started deleting the clips that begin
with that file name. After deleting a couple of them, the preview/edit
window returned. I was able to return to editing my 3 min movie. At one
point adding a transition to a clip caused the same problem (no edit window)
but I quickly deleted that one piece and went back to editing.

That long file name is something Windows Movie Maker creates. It appears to
keep track to various clips that are added to the movie. It appears to be
pretty buggy software.

How was the lon-named file created. Are you saying Movie Maker created it?
Was it done when you captured the video from you camera?

Is the file an AVI file? or WMV?

Have you tried to rename that file to a smaller name (Make a copy). This
would determine if the issue is related to the long-name of the file.
