cannot ping client but client can access all resouces on network

anyone ever seen this? And the client does not have a firewall installed.
Not sure what else to really search for. The client obtains an ip from the
dhcp server and can access all network resources can ping the DC,
everything; however if you ping the client from anywhere on the network I
get a request time out. really strange. Anyone have any thoughts?
 
I'm having the exact same problem. I'm able to ping the
client while windows is starting up, but by the time the
welcome to windows logo is displayed, the pings timeout.
Also, I cannot host a NetMeeting, but can call
NetMeetings hosted elsewhere on the network.

1) Ping is a TCP/IP utility and checks TCP/IP connectivity.

2) Accessing resources can be by NetBIOS name resolution, not
requiring TCP/IP connectivity.

3) Ping by name or IP?

4) Firewalls, routers, etc. can restrict ICMP traffic, and deny
pings.

5) You can ping the DC, but not the client from anything else. Did
you try pinging client from DC?

Absolutely I've seen this! And I have no answer!

I have a network where all my servers and Cisco gear can
ping each other on the same LAN segment, but WIN2K Pro and
WinXP workstations won't return an ICMP response! And,
they won't share files etc.

You WILL see about 10-20 ping responses from the
workstations while:

1. The machine is being powered up.
2. The machine is being powered off.

You will NOT see them during a restart!

This proves the hardware is OK, but the OS is doing
something to stop the responses. I think all this started
after some recent MS security updates.
