Cannot open volume for direct access

I have been trying to scan my disk with the "check disk". Every time I reboot
to let it work, I get a message on the blue screen saying it scanned which it
did not, and yet it also says it "cannot open volume for direct access". I
had earlier today had one that said another program was trying to run. I even
closed down my DSL and tried it and still it did not work. I can "scan for
and attempt recovery of bad sectors" which I do not need to reboot for that,
but it will not "automatically fix file system errors" when I reboot.

Thanks.

MaraJo

Thanks Andrew, I tried it and then tried to run the scan again and it still
did not work. From what I derive from the cmd, the scan will not work if it's
not dirty. Nothing else is wrong on my computer so maybe I will just wait for
few days and try again. In the mean time I will check the other link and
maybe someone will come up with something else. Thanks again.

Start, run, type in

chkdsk /f

Press enter, in the cmd window type

Y

Reboot and leave it alone.

If that doesn't work, boot the XP CD, go into recovery console

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_rec.htm

and run chkdsk /p

(You'd be well advised to ignore anything Andrew E. posts.)

A program called Hitman Pro can cause the problem.

Also a really old version of ZoneAlarm can cause the problem.

Hi Wes,
I appreciate all the help, but nothing is working it still does not scan.
The only one I did not do is the Recovery Console, I do not have one
on the CD and am not computer savvy enough to try it if I did. I tried
Microsoft's solution and disabled three that may be causing problems.
It still does not work. It worked before with these three running but it
will not now with or without them.

I may just wait for a few days and see what gives if it still does not
work then I will seek professional help that costs a fortune. Thanks
to all of you for your help again, I wish you could have helped me.
Something else may be wrong that I know nothing about.

MaraJo

MaraJo,

Spyware Doctor can also cause the problem.

[[There is currently no fix for this problem.]]
[[NOTE: You may have success if you schedule Chkdsk to run at startup and
use the /X switch, which will force a dismount. ]]
from...
JSI Tip 7079. You receive 'Cannot open volume for direct access' when Chkdsk
runs during Windows XP startup
http://www.jsifaq.com/subO/tip7000/rh7079.htm

To run chkdsk from a command prompt.

Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
In the command prompt, type:

chkdsk C: /x

Hit your Enter key.

The following error message appears:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you
like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system
restarts? (Y/N)

Type Y, hit Enter and close the command prompt.

Reboot.

The /x switch: Use with NTFS only. Forces the volume to dismount first, if
necessary. All open handles to the drive are invalidated. /x also includes
the functionality of /f. The /F switch fixes errors on the disk.

Wes you have been so patient and kind with me.
I tried your solution and it did everything you said
it would but it will not work. I do have Spyware
Doctor (PCTools) and installed it on Jan 21st. I
will have to uninstall it if need be. I still have
Norton Internet Security and NAV. I also occasionally
use SpySweeper (Webroot) but keep it off of start-up
so it does not run with Spyware Doctor which
I keep running.

I had to do a System Restore to get rid of the things
I was told before, every time I would reboot I
would get the same message and without even
trying to scan disk, but the message and the blue
window would still come up. It is doing it again since
I ran chkdsk C: /x on cmd. I will have to do another
restore to stop it from happening each time I reboot.

I wrote to PCTools but it will take a while to get a
reply from them. I am apt to believe that is the
problem due to the timing. It never happened
before I installed the software.

Thanks again Wes.

Wes,

Thanks so much. I uninstalled the Spyware Doctor and
instantly on reboot my C:/ scanned just perfectly. So it
was the software. I also got a reply from PCTools and
they are aware of the problem and are working on it.
Here is their advice to me:

"We are aware of the problem with chkdsk, defrag and
error-checking not working with Spyware Doctor installed.
Our development team is currently working on this issue.

"In the meantime, you could perform the following steps
which will allow chkdsk, defrag and error-checking to run
on startup.

"1. Exit from Spyware Doctor (to exit from Spyware
Doctor please right click on the Spyware Doctor icon in
the notification area (next to the clock on the Windows
taskbar) and select Exit from the menu that appears)

"2. Delete the file
'ikhlayer.sys' from c:\windows\system32\drivers\

"3. Restart Spyware Doctor

"Chkdsk, defrag and error-checking should now work."

Since I uninstalled it I can't try it. I have the CD and the
URL to reinstall it if you would like to know what it will
do to delete the file they suggest. Now that I know what's
causing the trouble if it does not work I can still uninstall
it again if it does not work. Thanks again Wes.

Spyware Doctor can also cause the problem.

[[There is currently no fix for this problem.]]
[[NOTE: You may have success if you schedule Chkdsk to run at startup
and use the /X switch, which will force a dismount. ]]
from...
JSI Tip 7079. You receive 'Cannot open volume for direct access' when
Chkdsk runs during Windows XP startup
http://www.jsifaq.com/subO/tip7000/rh7079.htm

To run chkdsk from a command prompt.

Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
In the command prompt, type:

chkdsk C: /x

Hit your Enter key.

The following error message appears:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time
the system restarts? (Y/N)

Type Y, hit Enter and close the command prompt.

Reboot.

The /x switch: Use with NTFS only. Forces the volume to dismount
first, if necessary. All open handles to the drive are invalidated.
/x also includes the functionality of /f. The /F switch fixes errors
on the disk.

Hi Wes,
I appreciate all the help, but nothing is working it still does not
scan. The only one I did not do is the Recovery Console, I do not
have one
on the CD and am not computer savvy enough to try it if I did. I
tried Microsoft's solution and disabled three that may be causing
problems. It still does not work. It worked before with these three
running but it will not now with or without them.

I may just wait for a few days and see what gives if it still does
not work then I will seek professional help that costs a fortune.
Thanks
to all of you for your help again, I wish you could have helped me.
Something else may be wrong that I know nothing about.

A program called Hitman Pro can cause the problem.

Also a really old version of ZoneAlarm can cause the problem.

Thanks Andrew, I tried it and then tried to run the scan again and
it still did not work. From what I derive from the cmd, the scan
will not work if it's not dirty. Nothing else is wrong on my
computer so maybe I will just wait for few days and try again. In
the mean time I will check the other link and maybe someone will
come up with something else. Thanks again.

Go to run, type:cmd In cmd type:CHKNTFS /? When CHKDSK doesnt
run on the volume you specified,CHKNTFS will run as
CHKDSK.You'll need the full cmd to run it though.

:

I have been trying to scan my disk with the "check disk". Every
time I reboot to let it work, I get a message on the blue screen
saying it scanned which it did not, and yet it also says it
"cannot open volume for direct access". I had earlier today had
one that said another program was trying to run. I even closed
down my DSL and tried it and still it did not work. I can "scan
for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" which I do not need to
reboot for that, but it will not "automatically fix file system
errors" when I reboot.

Thanks.

Wes; I'm impatient I guess, I reinstalled and tried to check
the disk for errors again after deleting 'iklayer.sys'. It works
just fine doing that. I had to stop the scan as I didn't need
it, but to let you know that everything is copacetic. Either
deleting that file or uninstalling will correct the problem
until they can get the problem ironed out.

What a relief... someone should go on that site and let
Don know that he can still use the Spyware Doctor
as it really is a good tool.

Thanks so much for your help maybe some one else will
benefit from these entries.

MaraJo,

I have never used Spyware Doctor, but I saw a post today...

[[I have found a bug in Spyware Doctor. Once the program is installed,
it locks the drive so that Partition Magic and Chkdsk cannot do
offline work.

The error from PM is "error 27 Cannot lock drive"
The error from chkdsk is "unable to gain exclusive use of drive"

Uninstalling spyware doctor fixed the problem. ]]

chkdsk and Spyware Doctor

The post above is all I know about it, but uninstalling Spyware Doctor
fixed the problem for Don.
