Cannot open (some) files in browser

Hi,
I use Win 2000 and IE 6 SP1.
In order to open a file in IE I checked the "Browse in same window" box on
my WinExplorer->Folder Options->File Types.

HOWEVER: I could do that ONLY for some files like: XLS, PPT but I c a n n
o t do that
for other like Word or txt or bmp etc. since the checkbox in File Types tab
appears grayed/dimmed.

Note I tried to find the link http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=174893 as
suggested by Frank Saunders in a previous case - but it is not available.

Any suggestion wellcommed.
