Cannot Open Programs

This is bizarre or so it seems. Dell has no solution
apparently. A week ago I updated VirusScan with no problem
as usual. I then tried to open IE6 & only got a quick
flash of a black window. Did a sfc scan & IE is ok. At
that time the Dell tech had me turn off system restore. Of
course I now have no restore points. The kicker is this: I
can't open certain start menu programs including system
tools, Wordpad, several admin. tools, etc. When I click on
properties the first thing I see is " This is not a valid
shortcut." Right-clicking does not show OPEN on tab.
System tools can be accessed thru other programs such as
help & support. And to top it off I cannot open my printer
thru the system tray as well. All of these programs were
fine prior to sfc scan. I'll take any advice at this
point. Thanks, Vik

.Yes. Did it foul-up something?

No, that command should fix problems that finds.

Because you no longer have any restore points, you are
somewhere between a rock and a hard place.

All that I can suggest is to re-instal XP.

Perhaps somebody else might have a less drastic solution.
