Cannot open ppt files or pps files

I have the Office 2003 Professional Edition (Academic Price).

I am not able to open ppt or pps files. The same applies whether Powerpoint
is open or closed.
When I try to open any files of this type a button appears on the taskbar
but no window with the slide show appears.

If I try to view the slideshow from within Powerpoint the same thing happens.
I have tried to install Office SP1 but I get a message saying I don't need it.
I have tried DEtect and Repair, Uninstall and Reinstall nothing seems to
make a difference.

I had Open Office installed previously and I am able to use it to openand
view ppt
files.

Please help me. I am very frustrated for I have paid money for this and it
does not work.

This is just a guess, but try this ...

Open PowerPoint (Task on the task bar is open but no window on the screen)
Right click on the task bar
Select Cascade windows

Does the PowerPoint window show up? If so, then the problem is that the
program is open and being displayed on the "other" monitor (which you do not
have hooked up at this time). To disable the second monitor (if you do not
use it), select the following.
Start => [Settings =>] Control Panel => Display =>Settings => Right click on
Monitor #2 => De-select Attached

Brilliant.... that solves the problem..... but now I have a new one.

Half of my Desktop wallpaper looks like what you get when you follow a bad
link on Internet Explorer. IE is not running and it is not in a window.

Very strange, I will RESTART and see what happens.

Thanks
