I received a PowerPoint 'ppt' file yesterday (6/15/2004)
that I cannot open. I just downloaded PowerPoint Viewer
2003 two days ago. The message I received is 'PowerPoint
viewer cannot open the file xxxx~1.ppt because the file
was created in a PowerPoint version that Viewer does not
support.

PowerPoint Viewer supports files created in PowerPoint 97
or later.

Please advise, I really need to open this file anyway
possible.

Thanks for any help.

Couple of questions:

1. What version of PowerPoint was the file created it?
2. What version of Windows are you running?

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]
[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PowerPoint
that you just created (you can save, but not open)? -

Hello,

This sounds like a problem which is fixed for PowerPoint, Word and Excel by
installing the Office 2003 Critical Update.

However, this update does NOT patch PowerPoint Viewer 2003 since the viewer
uses a trimmed down version of the MSO.dll (the file that is patched by the
update).

Since there is currently no solution, the best that I can offer is a
painful workaround:

1) Open the presentation in PowerPoint 2002 or patched PowerPoint 2003
2) Save the presentation under a different name

The resulting file should now open up just fine in PowerPoint Viewer 2003.
