I cannot open .img files in IE 6. I also do not seem to be able to make an
association between .img and the windows picture and fax viewer. When I go to
the folder options in the control panel and try to create an association I am
not given the option to "apply" the change. The file type .img also does not
appear in the list. If I download the .img image it opens using the windows
picture and fax viewer but if I try and open the image from the web I receive
a message that will only allow me to save the picture. It should open the
picture.
I am using XP pro, office pro 2003. The computer is new so I think it must
be some setting that I can't figure out. This application did work on my last
computer, and on other computers (i.e. my work computer using the same OS and
Office 2003) I can open the .img file from this web page. I was on the phone
with Dell for over an hour and they couldn't figure it out. Any help will be
appreciated.

Hi t_arminio :-)

You might try the information below and see if it will help:

XP users can use the following command to restore default
graphics file associations:

regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll

also...

To restore the default file association, go to
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
Download, unzip and merge the REG file, "JPE/JPG/JPEG Association Fix"
Some image/graphics programs will change file associations.

or..

How to set default viewer for images:

Go to control panel>Folder Options>File Types, scroll down to the image
extension, for example .jpg click change button, choose the program that
you want to use with that file type, click okay, then whenever you click on
that file, it will use the program you choose to view it.

or...

Click once on the file you want to open to select it. Hold down the Shift
key and right-click on it. Select Open With. Select the program you want to
use, but before selecting OK, check the box at the bottom that says "Always
use....". Select OK

and...

How to set default image editor for images

Go to control panel>Folder Options>File Types
Scroll down to the image extension, for example .jpg, or .gif
Click on Advanced button>New (to set a new action)
Enter the word Edit in the 'Edit' window (top window)
Put the cursor in the 'Application used to perform action' window
Click the Browse button
Search the folders to find the .exe in the program you want to use as the
image editor (CorelPP.exe)
Click on it to enter it into the window
Click OK

Do this for all the image types you want to use the editing program for
(.jpeg, .gif, .bmp)

This will add the item 'Edit' to the list when you right click on an image,
along with the Open, Print, etc., and other selections.

Then you need only right click on the image you want to edit, click on Edit,
and it will open the image into the editing program ready to edit.

Hope this helps :-)

What if you're IE6 won't display or open Flash files (.swf)? I've had that
problem for a few weeks and can't find an answer.

Make sure Flash is installed - http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer

If no joy, make sure it's not disabled - in IE go to Tools...Manage Add-ons,
make sure "Shockwave Flash Object" is not marked as disabled. (Note: if
it's not listed under Show: Add-ons currently loaded in IE", change to
"Add-ons that have been used by IE".

Hi MRM4TN :-)

In addition to Jon's information, you might also try the following:

A few of things could contribute to the problem. Have you checked your
firewall to see if the ad-blocker or Flash blocker is set to on or block?

Also, there are several Pop-up blockers that will block Flash unless you
turn it off. I had POP-UP Blocker and it would not open Flash at all, and
it took me a while to figure out what was doing it When I unchecked the
Kill Flash it stopped. Some Flash has pop-ups and the blockers will see
them as ads or and kill it any way.

Also, if you have SpywareBlaster installed, be sure you have Kill Flash
unchecked - Open SpywareBlaster - Tools - Click on Flash Killer then uncheck
"Switch off Flash Player" or in v3.1 Disable and block Macromedia Flash (4X
5X & 6X) in Internet Explorer.

also..

Flash player is an ActiveX control, so be sure you use a browser that
supports ActiveX, and your Security settings will allow Active X.

and...

Remove Flash, including all registry entries for it. Reboot then go to
Macromedia's site. Since it is Flash based you should get the dialog to
install Flash. Use the removal information at their site here:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/playerfaq.htm#remove

I am using the firewall through Windows XP and the pop-up blocker through IE6
XP SP2. If there are setting there that could block those, I haven't been
able to find it. In addition to not loading .swf files, I cannot download any
type of file from any site. It all started when I installed Norton
Systemworks 2005 and cleaned up a a few things. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled the Flash player, reinstalled XP and SP2, and a number of other
things. I cannot get anything to work and have gotten frustrated over it.

You are the man! That worked. I have finally ended 3 weeks of frustration. I
really appreciate the help.

You are most welcome. Glad to hear I helped a bit. Good work on your part,
too. I take it clearing the TIF/History did the trick? Thanks for the
public, positive feedback. Much appreciated and all too rare these days.
Cheers!

I cleaned all temp files (including offline content), resized the cache, and
installed and ran CCleaner.
