i,ve been trying to open files that i saved in my documents but when i try to
open it i get this msg :
windows cannot open file
it needs to know what file created it
: use web to find program
:select program from list
I have no idea what it,s talking about!!!!!

What type of files are these? You need to have a program installed that is
capable of opening those files and those files need to be associated with
that application. Post back with the last three letters of the file (the
file extension letters that come after the "." for example Microsoft Word
files are general .DOC , text files are .TXT and some graphics files are
..JPG or .BMP

What are the last three letters of the file?

I should have also asked how did you save this file? Was it just a webpage
or was it a link to a document. Are the last three letters .PDF ? If so you
will need Adobe Reader. It is free

Susan I don't know how to ask this question any other way. What are the last
three letters in the file name? That will give us a clue as to which program
may be able to read the file.

thanks for you help Harry,
the information was originally from a web site i used
to register my details, which i think only the university and I had access
to
as it is my own personal account. i saved it by going to FILE, SAVE IN
DOCUMENTS FOLDER, i have tried again to open it and it asks me to select
a
program, which automaticaly highlights adobe reader (does this mean it is
a
.pdf file?) however when adobe tries to open it i get :could not open file
because it is either not a supported file or it was sent as an email
attchment and wasn,t properly decoded.

Type cmd in Start Run
Drag your file into the window. The full name will appear. Depending on settings .txt may be the extension or merely part of a filename. This will tell for sure.

Then press the home key (to put the cursor at the beginning of the full path and file name) and type
notepad
and a space, so it looks something like

notepad c:\somefolder\K203.txt

and press Enter.

XP should be able to easily open a .txt or "text" file. Notepad is the
native program for reading such a file. Sometimes if the file is too large
notepad will have trouble opening it in which case WordPad or most other
wordprocessors can handle it. There is a possibility that the file is
corrupt. Anyway you can try right clicking on the file. From the menu that
opens select 'edit'. If the file is not corrupt it should open into notepad.
If the text is unreadable then the file might be another type that was
renamed to .txt You ay have to revisit the website and try downloading it
again.
