Cannot open file (second posting)

I have a "lost" file. Windows Explorer shows it exists
on my hard drive as a 190kb file. When I try to open it
from Excel using the correct password it does not give
the usual "Wrong Password" message but it does not open.
(Wrong passwords do give the "Wrong Password" message.)
However, the title bar shows the name of the file.
Clicking on most anything causes the file name to
disappear. I have tried to open the file from Windows
Explorer and by clicking on the recently used files
list. Nothing works.

This is strange. Any ideas?

Hard to say, but am more than happy to give it a go for you if you want to fire it on down. I'll
try it in Excel 2002 using the 'Open and Repair' option, and can also try it with OpenOffice for
you, which seems able to fix a number of Excel corruptions.

You would need to take the NOSPAM out of my email address if you wanted to send it to me.

Thanks for your gracious suggestion, Ken. The file
contains my fund and stock holdings that I treat as
secret. Maybe a little paranoia. Maybe a little
embarassment. Anyway, let me think about your offer
until late Sunday and I will get back to you.

Open file, go to Window and see if unhide is an option

If not -- try opening Word and opening the file in there

Gail, the other proposal failed, too, as I should have
known. When I try to open the "lost" file I get two
positives and a big negative. Positives are that the
correct password is not rejected and the title of the
workbook appears in the Excel title bar. The negative is
that nothing else shows up. The screen is blank. Menu
bar items remain lighted, other bars are grayed out.
None of the very few available actions from the menu bar
are options that would affect the "lost" file.

Thanks for trying!

Just a thought, but have you tried window / arrange / tiled to see if perhaps the thing is just
hidden from view below the borders or something.

No, View is not grayed out but any option for change is
grayed out. Same thing on protection. Everything.
Maybe the file is a fiction of the imagination of my
computer's memory. Thanks for your interest.

Gene

I could not try it because although the title bar shows
the workbook there is nothing to arrange. I think the
arrange option was just grayed out. I have tried every
trick I could think of. I sent a message to Gail giving
my explanation: my computer's memory is imagining things.

Well, maybe. Thanks again for your interest. Maybe I
will get the courage to show you the file after all!
