Cannot open Excel file by double clicking on the shortcut

Recently, I am not able to open an excel file by double clicking the shortcut on the desktop. I have to open Excel first, then click on File....Open etc etc...then only it opens. What could be the reason? Can anyone help me

Try holding shift then right clicking on the excel file. Then click "open with" and choose Excel from the next list. At the bottom there should be a tick box asking if you should always open with this application, tick that and click ok :)
 
When I click on the file I want to open, Excel starts and a blank window opens and stops. The contents of the file are not displayed. But when start excel and then try to open the same file the contents are displayed
 
If you right click on the file and look on Propeties, see where the location points it to. It's quite likely that the shortcut is corupt, or doesn't exist anymore.
