Cannot open DLL stsnwi.dll

After "upgrading" from FP 2002 to FP 2003, cannot open
any server-based web, either on localhost or remote site.
Error message: Cannot open DLL "stsnwi.dll"

At home, running XP Pro with IIS 5.1 and FrontPage
ServerExtensions 4.0.2.5322

Remote sites at workplace have FrontPage Extensions and
I've not had any difficulty connecting from home in the
past. Some or all have been recently upgraded from IIS 5
to Server 2003(Not absolutely sure). Use FP2002 at work
to author all webs directly.

Tried changing Authoring modes to no avail. Have
run "repair" and "reinstall" and "change options" without
fixing the problem. Unfortunately, I allowed FP2003 to
install as an "upgrade," which blew away FP2002, and
consequently, cannot get any work done.

The DLL in question is not on my computer. If I have to
completely uninstall and reinstall, is there any way to
preserve the "software activation" record? (This is the
one feature of MS software that I really detest, since
it's inevitable that I'll rebuild system or replace
computer before the next upgrade.)

Thanks for any help. I've searched MS KB and Google
cannot find any reference to "stsnwi.dll" but looks like
it has something to do with "shared technology services
network something"

TIA for any help.

You can uninstall Office apps, and then re-install usually without have to
re-activate, as long as you have not reformat the HD, and even if you do,
just select to activate by telephone.

Thank you. I discovered that earlier this afternoon when I uninstalled
FrontPage 2003 and reinstalled it, but it's nice to get knowledgeable
confirmation!

Also downloaded latest version of FP 2002 server extensions (and security
patch), and installed. Checked administrator permissions, server extensions
(for IIS5.1), and recalculated web. Still get same error. Guess I'll try
calling MS Tech Support, since I've gone through everything I can think of
to check.

Thanks again,
Araby

It sounds like your problem is on your work server (Windows 2003 Server?) and like the file stsnwi.dll is part of WSS (not FP)
- have you searched at work for the file and have your IT check permissions on W2003

Also try stopping / restarting IIS, and trying to check the FP SE in IIS
worse case in Control Panel Add Remove programs remove IIS, the reinstall it and the FP SE

Thanks for your suggestion. Have tried connecting to non-sharepoint servers
and reinstalling IIS and FPSE on my PC, and did a squeaky clean install of
FP2003, with the help of a very patient MS support person. No success yet,
but if solution is found, will share.
