Cannot open Cdrom drive

Hello,

I cannot open the cdrom drive any more on my PC. I press the button but
nothing happens. There is no CD inside though. Can you help me?

Turn off the system, then turn on again and try to open the
drive before (windows?) operating system loads.

If the drive opens, you have software or driver interfering
with it's operation. If it still won't open, does it "try"
to open, do you see any movement of the tray or hear
motor(s) spinning? If the motor is spinning it might be a
loose belt or stripped gear(s). If no motors it might be a
failed switch. Some drives have an eject hole that you
could push a thin object (like a straightened paperclip)
into, to release the door.

If none of that helps then you probably need a new drive.
 
If the light on the drive glows momentarily when you turn the system on then
there's power to the drive on many systems, but not all. If no light then
it's possible the power plug has become lose and simply needs some pushing
to get it working again. If after checking this and perhaps even trying
another power connector inside to power it nothing happens then most likely
some chip has failed and you need a new drive.

Thank you kony! You solved my problem. I had not noticed this eject hole
on the drive. I put a paper clip in it and the drive opened! Now it
operates normally.

I did once see a bad motherboard stop a CDROM from opening. dunno why.
The IDE connector was bad but I doub tthat'd cause it.

I know an old or damaged BIOS can cause USB keybs not to initialise or
to initialise late but again I doubt that was the cause for a CDROM
driev on IDE.

anyhow, I don't have that comp anymore to play around with.
