I'm trying to move a file from one folder to another and XP won't let me,
saying it is being used by another program or person.

I am able to rename it, open it or delete and restore it.

Hang on - I've moved it by dragging it onto the desktop, and I can do so by
opening both folders. It was just when I had the old Explorer view (or the
new type) that I couldn't move it.

Any clues why?

The file is locked by another program that's about all the info you'll get
without knowing what type of file it is.

Oops, sorry.

It's an avi but I haven't got Media player or anything like it running.
However this file and others I noticed the same thing happening to have been
opened by Media player and I haven't shut down since. And I think they were
all avi files, but I wouldn't swear to it.

I also have a folder that won't delete and this had an avi in it that I
looked at before moving (and that avi didn't want to be moved).

Well the folder is obvious. Can't delete a folder with a file that you can't
delete in it.

Try rebooting. Mot times with media files that will unlock them from
whatever program they're locked into.

Another option I've read in a NG recently is the OP said he copied the file
to a different folder and then somehow was able to delete both the nw copy
and the original.

The preview in Explorer has it open. Type taskmgr in Start Run. On the process tab select Explorer.exe and press delete. There may be two. In Filew - Run type cmd. Type
del <full path to file>

eg
del "C:\Documents and Settings\David Candy\My Documents\My Documents\My Videos\Windows Movie Maker Sample File.wmv"

Note quotes. Type explorer in File Run to get things started again.
