first issue that I cannot work out myself, after many years computing.
one folder (an mp3 album) slows my access down almost to a stop. I cannot
open the folder, or do anyhting else with it.
no virus, (well, not a virus that is recognised by the prog anyway) as have
scanned the relevant folder with AVG, in fact all my folders scanned every
day. also run spyware removal tools.
no other probs with anything else on the system; only when trying to access
this folder
it wont delete - cannot delete: invalid ms-dos function
and it won't move. can't get rid of it.
the folder it is part of slows down even when it is showing and not
accessing the prob folder
I need to quarantine it, and bung it away.
any ideas would be wholly appreciated.

You could try booting from a live CD such as Knoppix, Ubuntu or (my
preference) the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows http://www.ubcd4win.com/

You may be able to extract the stuff from the folder or blow it away
entirely.

I have had a look at the site, thanks. It may be a solution in time,
although it is going to take a fair bit of time to work through what this
software is, and which application will work for me, since I only need one of
the many on offer with the CD.
Perhaps you can recommend which of the utilities on the disc would work.

Otherwise, I am looking for a diagnosis of my problem, and a possinble fix
from within Windows utilities - that would be my first course before getting
deep into another program like the Ultimate Boot.

UBCD4Win boots a cut down version of XP, it does not include the normal
XP tools but does have CD burning, file explorer and registry editing
tools (as well as other stuff) that should enable you to investigate
the contents of the folder or delete it if that is what you want to do.
