Cannot map C$ between 2 XP Pro machines on same workgroup

Chris M.

I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer on this problem. While
I've seen other posts regarding it, I've yet to see a solution. I am unable
to map a network drive to the default share C$ from one XP Pro machine to
another XP Pro machine on my home network. Both machines are the only
machines on the network and they both belong to the same workgroup. There is
only one user account on each machine (the administrator account) and the
name of that account is exactly the same on both. In addition, there is no
password on that account on either machine. I have turned off "simple file
sharing" on both machines. And I have verified that the default share does
exist and is indeed named "C$" on both machines.

When I try to map from either machine to the other (I have the same problem
in both directions) here is what I do:

1. I go to "map network drive" and enter the path: \\MachineName\C$
2. I then get a box requesting username and password.
3. When I enter the username and no password and click OK, the same box just
pops back up. This just happens over and over, and I never am able to map
the drive. I have tried entering the username both by itself (e.g.
"UserName")
and I've also entered in the format "MachineName\UserName" and in the format
"WorkgroupName\UserName" In each case I still have no luck.
4. I have tried assigning a password to the one user on both machines, using
the same password in both cases. Still, I get the same results.

I have no problem seeing both machines in My Network Places when I click on
"View Workgroup Computers" and I also see the SharedDocs folder from both
machines in My Network Places and am able to pass files back and forth
through the SharedDocs folders successfully. But I simply cannot map to the
C$ share--and I'm completely stumped.

Any ideas? I truly thank you in advance for any help offered.

Best Regards,

Chris

Greetings --

I believe that the password _cannot_ be blank to access an admin
share. That would make breaking into another computer just too
simple.
