I use XP Pro on a Dell laptop and have been having trouble creating a user
that can log on. I do use the computer with my work network and also have a
similar problem with that domain. I can log in ok as admin on my local
network (my laptop) and create a user just fine. But when I try to log on
with the new user I get the message that the profile cannot be loaded - the
system cannot find the file specified.

It sounds to me like my profiles are being saved in some unidentifiable
space or the log in process is set to look in the wrong place. But it is
beyond me what is actually the problem or how to get at it.

Thanks for the reply. OK, more detail is needed. I want to use my laptop in
my home network (yet to be setup). The only user that I can log on to
locally is the one that I set up initially as the administrator of the
laptop. It is my understanding that this is not a good user to use for
everyday work, especially on the internet, to which my home network will be
connected. Any other user I create for the local system logs in with the
error message as described below.

My work domain log in works ok and that is what I normally use, even at home
off the work network, but I would like to have a local user that is not part
of the work domain because I want to set up a home network. I know I'm
misslng something here and I'm not sure what it is. It may be a separate
issue but why can't I create a new, non-admin local user that works? If I
move my old profile to the new user won't I just have another admin user to
replace the old one?

Once you created another admin profile you can delete other. So there wont be
any difference. Like fixed old profile.

It appears that I can create a new user profile - I now have two of them - a
user & an admin profile....but the actual profile foldes do not appear in the
Documents & Settings folder and the login can't find them, either!! The only
profile that my local machine domain login will recognize is the main
administrator profile and from that place I cannot actually create any new
profile folders. It just makes what appear to be placeholders. Why will it
allow me to make placeholders if it won't actually create the real folders?

What if I make a folder in the D&S folder with the same name as the
"profile" that I create? And then copy according to the directions. Would
the password of the original folder copy, too? Or would I use the password
of the created profile to login? Are the passwords stored in the profile
folders or with the placeholders? Interesting idea but I'm not sure I want
to try it before I run it by someone who might know what would happen. What
do you think?

I'm about frustrated enough to have the IT dept take my machine off the work
domain, but that creates another set of problems for me. I really want to be
able to use my machine for both purposes and it seems that XP Pro should be
able to function in that capacity.- Mo
