Cannot log on - Please help

I'm having tons of trouble getting to the desktop with
windows xp. I reinstalled xp (guidance from MS) and now
I cannot log on. The log on screen appears, but I never
set up a password and I am getting this error:

"The systme cannot log you on due to the following error:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not
be connected. Try again or consult your system
administrator."

Is there actually a domain controller on your network somewhere? What
version of Windows is it running?

I am running xp professional on a home network and don't
know or think I have a domain controller (is that just
for networks and not home computers?).
