to resolve a TCP/IP problem I want to remove and reinstall TCP/IP on my
domain controller (KB299451).
when I logon into the -Directory Services Restore Mode- (after restart and
enter F8), the system reject my logon attempts as administrator (username or
password is wrong). in -Normal Mode- I can logon.
what can I do?

peter

Did you change the password for administrator after installing the DC? You
will need the password that you had to give when installing AD on that
server. It was a specific question during install.

Marina

Great! That was exactly the article I was going to suggest to you. Solved
now?

Marina

thanks marina,

I didn't know that Directory Services Restore Mode has a seperate account
and of course I didn't remember the PW. but I found out how to recreate
(KB239803).

I can now logon into the DS Restore Mode. next weekend I will go on to
resolve my main problem with remove and reinstall of TCP/IP on my DC. thanks
again.

What kind of a problem do you have that you think you need to reinstall
that?

Marina

marina,

the history of my "main problem" you can see in a earlier message in this
newsgroup >configuration of network connection not visible 14/10/2003
10:20<. someone told me that he resolved the same problem with reinstalling
TCP/IP, so I want to try it also.
BUT now I'm not more going on to resolve this problem. my DC has various
others problems and this week he crashed (restart loop). I repaired it with
the server-CD but there are still others strange thinks. I'll make a clean
new installation of the DC.
but you can help me in giving me an advice how can I save and recover all
user accounts. that is the main work.

Hi Peter,

Unfortunately I don't have that history of your message anymore.
Can you give me the outline of your network? Reinstalling a DC will have a
lot of consequenses like workstations that will need to rejoin etcetera.
Think twice about this reinstalling. It might be worth to investigate the
errors and repair them.

Marina

yes I know marina,

but, no problem. I did it already sometimes. we have a small network (14 WS
and 15 users). the return of the clients to the LAN is done quick and the
configuration of DHCP, DNS, etc. is in my head. the only work are the
accounts and profiles of the users. after new creation of the user
accounts I have to copy or generate all configurations, e-mails, addresses,
files, etc. to the new profiles. that is work and can cause problems. for
that I'm looking for a possibility to copy and restore the user accounts.
I'll launch this question in the newsgroup for AD.

thanks a lot, you are competent and helped me much.

Hi Peter,

Just a question: did you have to reinstall the same DC a few times? Just
wondering.

Marina

hi marina,

the same DC but on differents hardwares. we are a poor NGO and I installed
first time the server on a 400Mhz/256MB. that goes but don't runs.
additional I have to use the server as a user too (Office2000, Outlook,
etc.), there is no money for a seperate computer for me. that is the
problem.

Hi Peter,

ARGH! Never ever use a server as a workstation. You're asking for trouble.
Really, how much does a simple workstation cost these days?

NGO??

Marina

marina,

a NGO is a "No Government Organisation". the most used phrase is "we don't
have money". we are located in rio de janeiro.
