cannot log in- no users appeaer in log in box

using windows 98 se. Computer has been working fine. Windows has been set
up with user profiles. Now when we try to log on there is no name appearing
in the log on box. You cannot enter text in the box and the only available
option is the cancel button. Using cancel or pressing the "esc" key produces
the error message: " EXPLORER This program has performed an illegal
operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the
program vendor."

The details portion of this message mentions explorer and a long series of
groups of numbers and towards the latter portion of the message it mentions a
stack dump and another series of groups of numbers.

I have booted from the floppy and run scan disk and no errors were found. I
copied the sys files and this did not help either. I also loaded in safe
mode and was still unable to load windows.

When this is happening the error message goes away and the desktop remains
but with no icons or anything elso displayed. In safe mode it is the desktop
with safe mode displayed in all four corners.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi - this is a group for Windows 2000 - you'd be better off posting in a
group for Win9x issues. This will be easiest if you use a newsreader like
Outlook Express or Forte Agent rather than the web interface to the
newsgroups - it's a lot easier to do nearly everything that way, including
searching, which is always a good idea to do before you post, as well as
mark messages to be watched, and filter based on replies to your posts.

The Microsoft public news server is msnews.microsoft.com and you can
subscribe to as many groups as you like.
