I have Sun Java (the latest version) enabled in Internet Options, I have
no other virtual machine installed, and Java's proxy options are set to
"direct connection" (I have no proxy server). I have WinXP Pro SP2 with
all the patches.

Java works fine in Firefox, but not in IE (this isn't a Firefox vs. IE
rant, it is just the situation).

Can anyone offer an idea for a fix?

Do you have any kind of popup blocking or "Security" software installed that
might be stopping scripting from working in IE? It does need a bit of
JavaScript or VisualBasic script to get Java Applets to launch so
temporarily disabling any other software might get you a clue at least. Main
reason I responded though was to ask if you get any error messages as a
result or does it just "Not work".

I don't get any error messages. I do have the default IE6 popup blocker
installed; turning it off makes no difference. I have Norton AV 2005
installed (it has script blocking). As far as I can tell, none of the
settings have been changed since Java last worked in IE.
