Cannot link charts in PowerPoint 2007

Has anyone run into this yet,
I create chart in Excel 2007.
I copy (or cut for that matter) the chart and paste it into PowerPoint
selecting the "Linked to Excel Data"
option in the small paste option icon.

I then change the data in the opened excel doc and the powerpoint
chart updates immediately.

BUT.
When I save these two files and re-open them, the link is GONE ?!

Any Ideas?
Am I doing something fundamentally wrong? This worked in 2003.

Have you saved the Excel file before copying and pasting the chart onto the
