Cannot link a user to a shared BCM database

This may not be the right place but I have installed BCM on one of my PCs (PC
Name PRESARIO) in my office at home (I have 3 PC and a Microsoft small
business server). I have shared the database to other users on the network
(these names have a tick in the check box) but when I try and use this
database from another PC (PC Name JANE), BCM says that the Databse on the
machine is inaccessible.
I can ping PRESARIO from JANE using tcpip address and by its name, so I do
not know what is wrong. I have also checked the firewall log on PRESARIO
(which is running Norton internet security 2006) and there does not seem to
be anything unusual in the log. I am sure it is something simple but I do not
know what it is.
Many Thanks

This is the right place, welcome.

Turn off Norton ISS and try again. Then turn off Windows Firewall (net stop
"Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)") and try again. You may
have a problem trying to turn off Windows Firewall because SBS enforces it
through group policy. You may have to do this on both PRESARIO and JANE.

To clarify, is this issue specific to only one machine on your network or
none of them work? If none work, do the steps on PRESARIO. If only JANE
fails, do it on JANE. BCM SQL instance runs on a non-standard port, so we
may need to configure a firewall exemption policy.

If none of that solves the problem, we'll at least have firewalls out of the
way.

Leonid. Great news. I switched of Norton ISS and got the same problem. Then I
switched it back on and stopped the Windoes Firewall services and Bingo.
Now Obvioulsy it is probably not a good idea to keep the windows firewall
off, is it?
I do have norton running on all 3 PCS (which by the way are now all
connected to PRESARIO), so how do I configure windows firewall to all access
to the database.

I can only say many many thanks for this as this has been driving me round
the twist for a few weks.

Thanks Leonid.

Hi Leonid. I posted a reply to say that it was a Windows Firewall proble but
now I have fixed this as well. On the PRESARIO PC I have started Windows
Firewall again and have opened up port 56183 to only the other PCs on my
network and it is working like a dream. I got the port number from FragHunter
on this community borad. So thanks to him as well.

Thanks Again for all of your help.

You are welcome. We have mentioned that port number in the past. :-)

Let us know, in a new thread, if you have any additional concerns.
