Cannot keep connection to Internet.

I had this problem with Windows Vista Ultimate where I could not hold onto a
constant connection to the Internet. I would try to download a file and while
the file was downloading I would lose and regain the connection. This would
stop but not restart the download. This happened to me for almost 4 days.

I custom built my PC and installed Vista Ultimate from a full version
purchased at Staples office supply. When I tried to contact Microsoft support
via email or chat options, my product ID was rejected and said it was
invalid. I called support and they told me that I would have to pay for
support and that my version of Windows did not come with support. What? I
paid $400 for this software and I have to pay for support? He said retail and
OEM versions have different support packages. How was I supposed to know the
difference if I'm picking it up at the local Staples? Anyways, he was nice
enough to allow me my session and transferred me to a tech person.

He tried everything that I have already tried except start the machine up in
Safe Mode With Networking. Everything worked!! Switched back to a normal boot
and everything worked!! I don't know what happened but everything has been
fine ever since (2 days now, knock on wood).

I have a Motorola Surfboard SB5100 cable modem connected to a Linksy's cable
router model BEFSR41 v4 and then hardwired to my PC using the motherboards
NIC. Intel D975XBX2 motherboard, Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 processor, 2 500GB
Western Digital SATA hard drives in a RAID0 configuration, EVGA 7950 GT KO
video card, 2GB Buffalo Firestix RAM, Sound Blaster Xi-fi Extreme Audio sound
card 600 watt power supply connected to a 780 watt APC Back-UPS XS Series.

This might not help--but check the Power Management on the network card and
make sure it's not set to "allow windows to turn off to save power."
