After i put the name of the domain i want to connect to, it prompts me for a
username/password. I put in the correct password combination, and it takes a
while, like it normally does, but then it comes back with this error message:
the following error occured attempting to connect to the domain 'my domain
name':
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.

Can anyone please help!?

I have seen this message when software firewalls interceptet
the join request.

i dont have any firewall apps running. When I look on the server, there are
no events in the event logs relating to it. When i look on the server under
client computers, the machine is listed, but it has a big red X. I removed
it, and tried to rejoin the computer to the domain and it just does the same
thing over again. gah! any ideas? could it be a licensing issue?

Your next step should be to check your connectivity to the server:

- Open a Command Prompt on the workstation.
- Type this command:

net use q: \\YourServer\SomeShare /user:YourServer\administrator

I suspect that the command will fail. Fix the networking issues,
then try again!

Well it lets me map a network drive, only it prompts me for a
username/password.

To get around this, I created a local profile with the users username and
password. I can connect to the servers resources but i cannot join the domain
for some reason.
