Dennis

I just received a new Dell Inspiron with XP Professional
SP1. Windows updates shows a number of critical and
security updates for my system, but it will not install
them. The download window comes up and shows downloading
all the files, but the installing bar never moves. I
left it sitting for an hour and when I came back the
installations never started.

I have followed all the suggestions in Knowledge Base
822798, but no updates will install. Any ideas or fixes?

Hi Dennis,

This is the short version of steps to troubleshoot access problems:

Disable any/all of the following installed on your system:

- firewall (even the native one)
- antivirus software
- popup stopper
- download manager

Go to the Control Panel/Internet Options, click on "languages" and make sure
at least your default language is installed.

Check the Date & Time applet and make sure that the day/month, and
especially year are correct, if you are out of date by 90 days or more you
will not see any updates.

Add these sites to the list of trusted sites under Internet Options/security
in the Control Panel:

https://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://Download.Windowsupdate.com
https://a248.e.akamai.net

Then retry Windows Update. If this doesn't help, try more troubleshooters
