Hello,

I get the following message when trying to install Windows Defender Beta 2
on Windows XP SP2:

A required update to Windows Update is available at the Windows Update
website. To view a list of all installatiion requirements, visit the
Microsoft website: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=63848.

I cannot use Windows Update.

Can somebody help me?

Thanks,

Tom

Are you unable to use Windows Update because it is broken on your system, or
because it is against corporate policy?

If the latter, do you really want to take whatever risks are entailed in
adding probably several updates to your system that are not approved for use
on your machine by corporate management?

I'm afraid I don't have a clear list of what the prerequisite items are. I
know some things that they are not--but I don
t have a precise list of what is required. The Windows Installer 3.1 would
be one that is required, but I'm sure there are more.

If Windows Update is broken on your system getting that fixed is much more
important than getting Windows Defender updated, and will help with that,
too.

Hi Bill,

My Windows Update is fine and I do not want to go against corporate policy.
We will be receiving Windows Installer 3.1 shortly and then I will try to
install the product again. If that does not work then I will wait until all
updates have been installed and try again. I'm confident it will eventually
work. :-)

Thanks,

Tom

If you want to attempt a one at a time and test, I'd love to hear just what
does it. There's been speculation that one or more of the WGA related items
are needed, but my own experience has been that machines in offices are
updating via autoupdate just fine when the WGA updates are not yet chosen
via Windows Update.

Sure, although it won't be easy tracking down which updates are installed. I
know that I was able to install WDB2 on my main PC (it has windows installer
3.1). My second PC does not have windows installer 3.1 so my guess is that
it is the missing update. The other thing I'll try next week is simply
updating the Windows Update ActiveX control, which I am allowed to do.

Tom

Thanks! I don't mind posting the advice "do an express scan and apply all
offered updates" because it is the safe thing to do--however, it'd be nice
to know precisely what is needed, and when things like the WGA notification
app (whose eula states that it should not be applied to production
equipment) get thrown in there, it makes it a little tougher to give that
advice in a succinct way.

In the .install group, Al has reported that for his system, the Windows
Installer 3.1 package and the WGA Validation tool were what was needed--but
that was in terms of getting the app installed, and not in relation to
updates.

What is WGA Validation? Is this the Windows Genuine Advantage? If so, it is
installed and my operating system is valid.

The Windows Installer 3.1 did not resolve my problem. Yes, this is related
to simply not being able to install the product. There is no clue as to
which update is required so that I could download it manually...

Tom

Problem solved! I used MBSA 2 and installed the missing updates. WD then
installed correctly.

Thanks,

Tom

I'm glad you got it going, but I'd sure like to come up with a basic list of
what's needed--were there a bunch?

--

There were four in total:
- MS05-004
- MS05-046
- MS06-005
- MS06-018

I did not try to install WD after each Hotfix but it worked after all were
installed.

Does WD use the .Net Framework 1.1?

I'll confess to not knowing the answer about the .NET usage. I have that on
most, perhaps all machines, but I'm not certain of the answer. My suspicion
is yes, but I haven't figured out how to verify it. I was going to
uninstall 1.1 from my machine and see what broke, or whether it would list
what was going to break, but it wouldn't uninstall--no source available, so
I couldn't do that test.

Thanks for the list.
