Hello

I have a server which had a failing hard drive and we took an image of the
system and copied to a new hard drive. The old hard drive was failing so I
suspect some of the fils copied may have been corrupted. Anyway, server
boots and users don't notice anything different but server is definitely
behaving strangely.

Internet Explorer just freezes when you open it. I tried re-installing IE6
but it installs in about a minute and no difference noted.

I tried to re-install Service Pack 4. But when you install you see message
Inspecting System... - but it just seems to stay on this screen. It
actually stayed on this screen for 24 hours.

Is there another way to reload Service Pack 4 - bypassing the inspecting?

Am I going to have to bite the bullet and re-install? hat is a scary
thought as we have MS Exchange on this box and remote offices connecting in,
and all sorts of things which I know are not documented.

Any help would be much appeciated.

Are you certian that you have fixed all the server's hardware issues?
No bad memory, that sort of thing? An event that took out the hard
drive could have done other damage.

As your users are fine for now, take advantage of this and start
docmenting the undocumented stuff in case you do have to reinstall.

The hard drive gradually failed. There were problems with it for a few
weeks - previous IT company strangely did nothing about it. So pretty
confident that hardware problems restricted to old hard drive.

Is an install of the operating system over the top of Windows 2000 Server a
safe(ish) thing to do? Only major application running is Exchange. Would I
keep all my Exchange settings? What about users? With an install over top
retain users?

Probably this is why they're not the current IT company.....

You may want to test the RAM anyway. Memtest86 works well. It will do
no harm.

IT can be made safe-ish by the simple precauion of making a clone just
before you start the process. That way you're no more screwed than
before. :)

It *should* be fine, but given the problems you've been having, I'd
hesitate to guarentee it.
