I get through a portion of the SP1 install and then am hit
with a message saying "access is Denied" while it is
backing up registry keys. If we choose ignore a few times,
and continue with the install, we get another message at
the time of the installing of files that says "Access is
Denied" and we have no option to continue.

Any ideas?

Dear Bill,

Thank you for your post.

My name is Laura and it is my pleasure to work with you on this post. I
understand that when you tried to install Windows XP SP-1 you received the
error message saying that "Access is denied".

What Nicholas relates in their post is right on target, and you are well
advised to take their advice. If this problem continues, please send the
C:\Windows\svcpack.log file to us for further research.

Have a nice day!

Best regards,
