Cannot install software

I'm trying to install a very old version of 3d Studio Max (v3), but I get the
error: "Problem with HWL driver installation. Rerun the Sentinel Driver setup
separately for your platform."

What does this mean and what should I do??

You should find out if the software is Vista compatible. It probably is
not.
 
Also, right-click on its setup.exe>properties>compatibility> install it in XP
SP2 mode; if it worked with that.
 
I've tried every compatibility option with no luck. Windows 98 is the only
one that doesn't give me the driver error, but I don't think that requires
the HWL driver anyway. In any event, it doesn't install. (- even though I've
had no problems installing on Windows 2000 & XP on my previous PCs)

What does the error "Problem with HWL driver installation. Rerun the
Sentinel Driver setup separately for your platform." mean? How do I rerun the
Sentinel Driver setup and would this fix the problem?
