I downloaded PFbackup from MS for 2003 but it will not install. I get a
message that says cannot install it because I have a version installed and
that I should uninstall it before I install again. This, however doesn't
seem to work as I have uninstalled the previous installation from add/remove
progs but I still get the same message.

Amazing what can be discovered in Microsoft's own knowledgebase if you
look:

- Go to http://support.microsoft.com.
- Search for "install personal folders backup" (all words) under
"Outlook".

Read the article titled, "Outlook 2000: You Cannot Install the Personal
Folders Backup Add-in" (#263104). There is another KB article #810932
if you select to look under "Outlook 2002". There is no OL2003-specific
version of this article nor is OL2003 listed in the supported products
for these KB articles - because PFB is too old, not supported for
something like 2 years, and causes Outlook to crash or hang way too
often. When Outlook is loaded, it has to load all plug-ins. When
Outlook is exited, it first has to unload all plug-ins. If the plug-ins
hang or crash, they take Outlook with them. Exiting Outlook will take
longer as PFB might continue to run to perform an automated backup of
your .pst file(s).

PFB was flaky and eventually had to be dropped on each host that used
it. I see they have an updated version dated October 2003 so maybe it
is less flaky. However, there is no real need for PFB if you already
perform backups of your computer. If the only data file that is
important is your .pst file then PFB has value but only if you save the
backup copy to a different physical hard drive or to removable media.
If other data files are equally important, you should be performing
backups of all of them, including your .pst file.

Thanks Vanguard, I didn't need the lecture about looking through the
knowledge base though.
Some people such as your good self are obviously proficient users of
newsgroups etc etc whilst the rest of us are just mortals

A one sentence gibe does not a lecture make. Other than the first
sentence, the rest of my post was a derision of PFB.

If you knew about looking at Microsoft's support site, why did you post
here and not mention that Microsoft's KB article didn't help? We
volunteers don't need to be wasting our time researching KB articles,
doing Google lookups, or composing a reply that duplicates what you have
already read and tried but failed. So if you have already tried some
failed solutions, let us know about those so we don't proffer the same
but failed solutions.

Did you actually read and try Microsoft's KB article(s)? Did it work?
You implied that you already knew to look there so I would assume you
would've already tried the solutions there before coming here. When I
had the problem, I had to yank the .msi file out of the .zip download
file to get it to install (as per KB article #810932). I didn't like
that I had to use WinZip. I have other zip tools (PKZip) and each makes
it own self-extracting .exe file which only that zip tool can be used to
yank the .zip file out of the .exe file. It would be much easier if
Microsoft simply provided their Pfbackup.msi file instead of requiring
the use of a 3rd party product.

Sorry Vanguard, your help is invaluable, I just get a little peeved when
everyone expects that a newsgroup user is a seasoned veteran and knows how
to 'google', read microsoft articles and make sense of what they are
reading. I do also understand your frustration at having people like me who
are either completely dumb or just too idle to do my own legwork. Like
yourself I don't understand why MS don't include thier own pfbackup after
all the office package cost me an arm and a leg. I do appreciate your help
and thanks for your assistance in this post and in public.security.

In fact, I was assuming that you weren't a seasoned user but instead
didn't know either where to look or how to look. The newbie might not
know where to look. They may also not know how to perform a search that
sufficiently narrows the matches to a low number to make it reasonable
to peruse the matches, or they may not get any matches, and some users
are just not very persistent.

Sometimes I would rather "train" the user in using Microsoft's KB site
or Google rather than just be their automatron by doing their lookups
and just giving them the link. By having them actually walk through the
process of doing the search themself, they might later decide to try
that avenue of support before blurting out a post (i.e., a knee-jerk
response). I tell them how I did it so they'll know how to later do it
for themself when that next problem crops up, and there will be that
next problem.

Got it (thanks to you) had to extract .msi file from the exe and it loaded
fine
Thanks a lot for your assistance
