Hi.

Am upgrading ME to W2k.

Got through the installation process to the point where I
select a partition.

W2k did not identify any partition.

When I selected "C" for continue, received the message:

"Cannot install on drive connected to pc card".

Any advice?

Thank you in advance.

Scott

1.) There is no supported upgrade path from WinME to Windows 2000

2.) To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or
setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows
2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

You didn't mention the drive controller (possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or
ATA100, or raid, or serial ATA), but you may need to boot the Windows 2000
setup disks or CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's
controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

So, the process worked perfectly up to the point where W2k
setup asked for manufacturer device support for the mass
storage device (looking for oemsetup.txt) ON THE A: DRIVE!

Problem is, Dell ships a whole CD of drivers. CD.

Am I reduced to going to find the ATA 100 controller
drivers and loading them on a 3.5" floppy disk, or does
anyone know of a workaround to get W2K install to
recognize the Dell driver install on a CD at this point in
a W2K install?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Thanks, Dave! I'll try it.

The controller is an ATA 100.

The only place setup will look for third party mass storage drivers is a
standard 3.5" floppy drive. You can go to the dell site and enter the system
service tag and download the driver.

Dave, I hope you show this note to your boss.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate the observations,
comments, and information.

Job's done.

For folks that don't do this every day, a push in the
right direction at a critical juncture can save hours.

Thanks, and best wishes for the new year.

Actually we don't work for anybody here. We just do this of our own free
will. Glad to hear your problem is sorted and thanks for the feedback.
