Cannot install local printer

I have recently aquired a HP deskjet 690C Windows detects
when plugged in and goes through the instalation process
then fails at the end saying an error has occured. I have
tried installing manually but when you click the finish
wizard it errors again and says operation aborted.
Any ideas apart from a reformat. Used the restore points
to no avail

Try it with a different PC. Sometimes the lp1 port is bad.
Some printers require an ECP port some a SPP port. I
recently had a Canon 4400 that would install on three PC's
but would not install on fourth that it was supposed to.
