Running Windows XP Professional. A key program I have does not run right with
Explorer 7.0. Attempted to install Internet Explorer version 6.0.2800.1106.
Computer said it had detected a newer version. Rightfully so since I had IE
7.0 on there. Got rid of it through the add.remove program and thought I had.
Again tried installing IE6.0 and got this msg: Setup has detected a newer
version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system. Setup cannot
continue. How can that be? I uninstalled it. I've searched and find no trail
of IE7 anywhere. After I deloted I read one of the answers on this chat about
making sure you asked to display and delete hidden files. Unfortunately it's
now gone and if there are hidden files of 7.0 preventing total uninstalation
I would not know how to find them. Any suggestions? Thanks.

After removing Internet Explorer 7 was your attempt to remove then
reinstall Internet Explorer through the "Add/Remove Windows components"
option under "Add or remove programs"?

Do you have a restore point from before you tried Internet Explorer 7?

Have you checked to determine if that important program has been updated
to work with Internet Explorer 7? Does the publisher have any sort of
user forum or FAQ in support of the application? Have you used a search
engine like Google to see if anyone else is experiencing the same
problem? I would probably be preferable if some setting in the important
application or Internet Explorer 7 could be changed to make them
compatible, since new security updates for earlier IE versions may cease
being available as new IE versions come out.

If you uninstall IE7, the machine is automatically returned to IE6. IOW you
don't need to nor can you reinstall IE6.

Are you running WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3? If SP3, was IE7 installed before or
after SP3 was installed?

Robert- Read what you said about security lacking and contacted company. They
DO accept IE7. So I have downloaded it. Unfortunately I still keep getting
the same info: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. Did a network
diagnostic for Windows XP and got a msg saying that Windows is not currently
managing my wireless network. I wonder if that's relevant. It's not stopping
Firefox from working. I've got a Nvidia graphics card- an expensive one.
Reason I mention it is that my grandson installed it when here this summer
and I wonder if something in the card is conflicting. But again it doesn’t
stop Firefox. Just throwing stuff out there hoping that someone can find what
the root of this problem is. Thanks to everyone for your help. We will get
this solved one way or another. Tom

Currently I am running WinXP SP3? I believe IE7 was installed after SP3 was
installed.

I just learned yesterday that IE7 IS compatable with the program I want. But
IE7, like IE6 refuses to load.

If IE7 was installed after WinXP SP3 was installed, uninstalling IE7 via
Add/Remove Programs should automatically return the machine to IE6.

Do you use a "Registry cleaner"?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you
installed (or uninstalled) IE7 and/or WinXP SP3?

I seem to have a similar, yet different, problem. After my hard drive
was reformatted using the Restore disk, I now have IE 6 and OE 6.
Previously I had IE 7 (but OE 6). So my computer tech downloaded
(we thought!) IE 7. However, when I looked at it, it was still IE
6! It's not a big deal (I can revert to using 6, but had gotten
used to 7). Anyone know why this happened? And/or how I can upgrade
to 7?
