Hi! When I first installed XP a while back I went immediately to add/remove
software and removed Internet Explorer. Since then I have been not needed
it, but I need Internet Explorer now. I installed SP2 a few months ago.
When I run the ie6setup.exe file, I get an error message that says "Setup has
detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this
system. Setup cannot continue" and it exits. I have gone through the
knowledge base on the help and support site and stumbled upon the page:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304872 I
followed the instructions and edited the correct things in my registry, but
it still didn't fix the problem, I still cannot install IE. I'm desperate
and don't really want to pay 35 dollars to get live technical support. Can
someone please help. Thank you so much.

Hi Todd :-)

First off...could you please explain how you removed IE in XP? IE is a core
part of the XP program and can not be uninstalled or removed, at least not
without damaging the OS.

You might try the following and see if it will help:

XP

But, before repairing IE6, you will have to remove Windows XP SP2

from your system.

Hope this helps

Jan,

Thanks for that. I was able to get past that initial error where it says a
newer version was already installed. Now, once it's initializing the setup
it gives me a new error message, it says: "Setup was unable to install all
the components. Please close all applications and try running Setup again."
I didn't have any applications open, so I tried it again and I got the same
message again. You asked how I removed internet explorer in the first place,
well I went to add/remove programs and removed it there (yes, it was there),
then I deleted the program files\internet explorer directory. This could be
why I'm having trouble with it now. Anyway, thank you Jan for the first
response, I hope you can help me with the current problem I'm having. Take
care.

Todd

Hi Todd,

First, unchecking Internet Explorer from Add/Remove Windows Components, does
not uninstall Intenret Explorer. It just hides access to IExplore.exe (by
removing the shortcuts). However, you can still launch IE by typing
IExplore.exe from Start/Run.

Secondly, the "IsInstalled" registry modification applies to Pre-XP SP2
systems.

Ramesh, internet explorer does not run if I type in iexplore.exe because I
deleted the directory from my program files directory. The file iexplore.exe
isn't actually on my computer.

Todd,

Deleting the folder manually is not recommended. I'm afraid, reinstalling
SP2 is the only way to solve the problem, apart from a repair installation.

To reinstall IE you will have to uninstall SP2 first.

Correct me if I am wrong but, you may be able to fix this by
reinstalling the operating system which will reinstall Internet
Explorer and any corrupted or missing system files that were deleted.
Once finished remember to update windows to include the latest security
updates and SP2. Hope this helps.
