I was given a printer to use on my home system. I have the cd and tried
installing it but the system starts the install and runs through the
set wizard almost finishes then hits me with a setup error " The HP
buisness inkjet 1200 has encountered a severe error and will now exit.
Restart your computer and run setup again". I installed the printer on
my work pc using the CD which is a Dell laptop running windows XP
professional. Everything worked fine. I downloaded the driver from the
HP site proceded to install it and I get the same error. worked with
with HP support who had me try to copy and paste the driver in the add
a printer wizard, this would not work . They had me contact microsoft
blaming it on XP. I contacted microsoft who suggested I contact dell
to solve the problem. Dell did not offer any insight.

Is there anyone out there who may have dealt with a similar problem.

Do you connect via the parallel or USB port?
Are you sure the ports are working correctly.
Sometimes with driver installs if something goes wrong you have to manually
ferret out and delete all references to the printer in the registry and all
dll files the printer may have installed in XP then reboot and try again.

I use USB. Other devices seem to work fine, eg cameras and Ipod. I was
using lexmark printers on the system via USB prior to this one. I used
a printer scrubber from HP but am not sure it got everything. I did not
manually go through the registry.

One last suggestion.
Unplug all your USB peripherals.
In Contol Panel/system/hardware/device manager delete all the USB ports and
related items.
When you reboot Windows will reinstall all these devices.
Then try to install the printer.
Your other peripherals will reinstall themselves when you plug them in even
if the HP printer will not properly install.
The USB driver could be corrupt or could be using an unshareable resource.
If that does not work . . . .

In desperation, try running the install software in compatibility mode.
Right click the .exe file and then choose an earlier version of the OS.
It might work.
