Cannot Install Flash Player

Like many other people apparently, I cannot install Flash Player. I have XP
Home SP2 and IE 6 and have gone through the Macromedia trouble shooting
instructions, uninstalled and reinstalled and deleted a particular registry
entry that was previously suggested. I still cannot install this software and
therefore cannot enjoy certain content at many websites. I would be most
grateful for expert assistance!

I am having the EXACT same issue. And now, at this point, because Macromedia
recommended deleting the version, I have no FLASH at all and cannot look at
many websites. I tried to install an older version of FLASH to at least get
that version but cannot.

I also tried to log onto Macromedia to post the problem but their message
board is down today. I'm wondering if this is getting to be a big problem?!

Help anyone!! Thank you!!

Do you have any toolbar or other helper application that blocks Flash? Some
toolbars that block pop-ups also have a Flash-blocker.

See this site for .reg file to make sure Flash is enabled in the registry:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm - line 363 on the left.
Download to your desktop and double-click to merge to your registry or right
click and choose Merge - or Edit to see exactly what modifications it will
make to your registry.

Check your security settings - Tools...Internet Options...Security tab,
click Internet Zone, click Custom, and make sure automatic downloads are
enabled. Ensure that "Download Signed ActiveX controls" and "Run ActiveX
controls and plug-ins" are not disabled.

If you are behind a proxy server or are in an administered network
environment - they may be blocking Flash.

If you are trying to install via a web page, try installing via the
downloadable installer:
http://www.macromedia.com/go/full_flashplayer_win_msi or
http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/killbitblock/flashplayer7_ax.exe

This is a silent installer - you will get no feedback if the install is
successful. You can check for your Flash install status here:
http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/

Tools...Manage Add-ons...change menu to "Add-ons that have been used by IE"
and make sure that "Shockwave ActiveX Control" and "Shockwave Flash Object"
are set to "enabled".

Try posting your issue to the Macromedia Flash support forum:

As you'll see, you are not alone in having trouble installing Flash, and
they have support engineers there monitoring the group.

Jon you are a legend! This problem was driving me nuts until I read your
suggestions.

Cheers

Thanks for the kind words, and for posting back. For the benefit of others,
what did you do to resolve your problem?

Jon,
I was having the same problem and frustrations. Thanks for your input.
Loading flash via the downloadable installer resolved my problems. Thanks
again!!

Here was my work around solution: install FireFox. It recognizes the
macromedia flash player. For some reason this is an unfixed bug with IE only

If you mean from Macromedia/Adobe website...I did that and it still doesn't
work. I checked the KB's and deleted the files mentioned also Macrmedia from
add/remove programs...still doesn't work. I somehow found that I have flash
player 8 and 10 and the KB said to apply patch to older version which I
evidently don't have cuz I get the infamous "The version of Macromedia Flash
you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install."
This is really sucky and my brain is mush now :-) how can I fix this!
P.S. Yes it does work on Firefox but that is not always convenient-thanks
Uncle Bill!

Completely uninstall any Flash you currently have and try to reinstall:

Thanks for your reply Jon!
I guess if I have a flash-blocker, I don't know how to find it. I don't
think I do cuz it worked before all the updates.
I went to Kelly's registry checker for flash and when I did a right or left
click I received:
Registry Error
Cannot import C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\Flashenable.reg;not
all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the
system or other processes. I had all other windows closed.
My security settings are all OK.
I think I will try to completely uninstall everything flash related and try
to redownload.
I'm not in a network I am just a retired ol' bat working on a home
computer...and not very well I might add!!!!

I know this is a whole year and more later but I have been having an issue
with this for a couple of days and have not been able to figure it out! I
tried tons of things.

Your post had it fixed within 2 minutes!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

Tim

Yes, a belated thanks from me too! I'd just encountered this problem on 31
Oct 2008 and came across your solution. For the benefit of others, I
downloaded the macromedia installer and installed from that.
Thanks very much for that, Jon, and all the very best to you!
Best regards,
