I have been struggling with this problem for quite a while- Whenever I try to
go to a site with flash, I get a prompt "do you want to install flash
player?,etc." If I type yes, it goes through the motions and nothing happens.
I have gone through all of the steps on the Macromedia site- uninstall
completely, install, install off standalone file numerous (15-20) times to no
avail. The standalone download will try to install it, but abort with an
error message saying I do not have permission to change my settings, try
again in an administrator's account. The thing is, I am logged on in an
administrator's account with full permissions. I don't get it. I am not a
computer whiz by any stretch and am getting very frustrated. I deleted the
flash kill setting as per intructions on another post, no luck. I am thinking
it is a problem with IE because I generally browse through Firefox and have
downloaded the plug in into that with no problems. My IE folder doesn't have
any reference to flash or macromedia in the plug in folder BTW. If anyone can
help me out on this, I would be ever grateful.

Hi,

You started a new thread instead of replying to the latest answer given, so
I can't see what was in that last message.

Did you try shutting down the firewall to see if it makes a difference?
There are firewalls that can block Flash content or that can be set to block
it.

Kind regards

Thanks for the reply- Yes, the firewall has been turned off. I have also
tried downloading after shutting down adaware,MS antispyware, Norton
systemworks. That was my first post, sorry if I did it wrong. The thing that
gets me is that Firefox handles it fine, but I am trying to do the tutorial
on dreamweaver and it defaults to IE, and all I get is inundated with those
"do you want to install..." messages. If it matters, when I start the
computer up, it goes directly to my user profile which I gave admin rights
to. I noticed that I do have an "administrator"account which I don't have the
oppurtunity to log onto. Again, Macromedia seems to think I am not logged on
as an administrator, while I think I am. Who is correct? Thanks

Do you have any toolbar or other helper application that blocks Flash? Some
toolbars that block pop-ups also have a Flash-blocker.

See this site for .reg file to make sure Flash is enabled in the registry:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm - line 363 on the left.
Download to your desktop and double-click to merge to your registry or right
click and choose Merge - or Edit to see exactly what modifications it will
make to your registry.

Check your security settings - Tools...Internet Options...Security tab,
click Internet Zone, click Custom, and make sure automatic downloads are
enabled. Ensure that "Download Signed ActiveX controls" and "Run ActiveX
controls and plug-ins" are not disabled.

If you are behind a proxy server or are in an administered network
environment - they may be blocking Flash.

If you are trying to install via a web page, try installing via the
downloadable installer:
http://www.macromedia.com/go/full_flashplayer_win_msi or
http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/killbitblock/flashplayer7_ax.exe

This is a silent installer - you will get no feedback if the install is
successful. You can check for your Flash install status here:
http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/

Tools...Manage Add-ons...change menu to "Add-ons that have been used by IE"
and make sure that "Shockwave ActiveX Control" and "Shockwave Flash Object"
are set to "enabled".

Try posting your issue to the Macromedia Flash support forum:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/categories.cfm?catid=184&forumid=44
As you'll see, you are not alone in having trouble installing Flash, and
they have support engineers there monitoring the group.

Jon,et al- that seems to have worked,Flash wasn't enabled in the registry. I
downloaded the installers and it seems to be working fine. No popups asking
me to istall flash. One thing, when I tried to install the active x control,
I got an "inf install failure. reason:unknown" message. When I hit ok, I got
an "installation complete" message. There's always something to keep you
guessing, I suppose. Thanks to all you who help the helpless.
