I am attempting to install Palm Desktop software on my PC for my niece. This
is a first time installation. After installing the software and connecting
the cradle to launch Hot Sync, I receive a baloon with the message "New
Hardware Found". I am then prompted by a dialogue card to install the driver
from the Palm Software
CD-ROM. The problem is that the driver will not install. The file is copied
to my hard drive as "PalmUSBD.sys". I cannot open it to install from either
location, CD-ROM or hard drive C:, the file appears as an icon "USBD". I'd
pull out my hair, but I'm already bald.

Initial questions..

1. Which version of Palm Desktop software?

2. Is the cradle plugged into a COM port,
or is it plugged into a Serial-to-USB adapter?

3. Did you manually copy the "PalmUSBD.sys" file?

1. Software version: 4.0.1
2. Cradle is plugged into USB port.
3. Yes, I have tried to manually transfer the file.

Could you try this...

Connect the PDA, the Cradle, and the USB cable to the computer.

Then click [Start]
| Control Panel |
| Add New Hardware |

I tried that. It doesn't work. I've tried everything. The cradle is the "H"
type. There were issues with earlier ones.

I suggest you contact Palm or check Palm forums.
