Cannot import files

I have done a lot of research on the web and it appears that there are many
people having importing issues. I am not able to import video or audio files.
I have tried importing wmv and other common and compatible formats. I have
checked and unchecked compatibilty of filters section. I have been to many
sites and tried suggested solutions with no success.
