Cannot Import Contact List

I have two problems that appear to be related. First, when I click on the
address icon in Outlook 2003 I get an error message that the Address List
could not be displayed and the Contacts folder cannot be opened because it
has been moved, deleted, or I don't have permissions. If I click on the
Contact tab, however, I do go to the (empty) Contacts folder (it is empty
because I haven't put anything in it yet, which leads to the real problem).
Second, when I try to import a Contacts list (from the Contacts list of
another computer) I get all the way to the 'import location' window of the
wizard and it doesn't give me a choice for where to import to...no browse,
etc. The 'next' button is also grayed out. Effectively, it stops there and
won't allow the import to continue. Any ideas on what could be the cause? I
had imported my mail messages from a backed up Outlook file previously
(successfully) and wonder if that did something to the Contacts list??
Thanks.

Russ, thanks for the information. I appear to be configured correctly,
however, when I checked the configuration there were two folders, "Contacts"
and "Contacts in Personal Folders" -- both of which looked like they were
configured and named "Contacts." Maybe that is part of the problem? When I
say "Contact List" I'm simply using the language I see in Outlook. On the
left sidebar of Outlook (at the bottom) I have four selections -
Mail/Calendar/Contacts/Notes - that is the Contacts that I'm referring to. I
don't understand the difference I guess between Contacts and an Address Book.
Seems to me they should be one in the same. Regarding format...I'm trying
to import a CSV file. I don't think that will be a problem if I can get past
the current issue that Outlook seems to be having with the Contacts folders
that are present...even though they are empty. Whatever help you can provide
will be much appreciated. Thanks, Russ.

Why do you have more than one reference to a Contacts Folder in the Outlook
Address Book? Do you have more than one Contacts Folder in your profile? If
not, remove the invalid reference.

Russ, one other thing. I notice that my mail folders are all represented
twice on the sidebar when I am looking at my email. The personal folders are
all listed...and then they start over at the bottom of the sidebar. The
exact same thing is in each. Again, it might go back to when I restored the
email messages as it appears everything got duplicated somehow. I wish I
could give more details but I don't know how Outlook is built.

Use Folder list view. If you do not have more than one Contacts Folder in
your profile, then remove the invalid reference to one here:
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or address

Yes, I did import the CSV file. That's how I got the addresses into the
Contacts list. As I said, that part seems to have worked. The problem at
this point is that each folder in Outlook now appears twice (the contents of
the folder is not duplicated, just the designation of the folder). It's not
a huge problem I guess but it shouldn't be doing that. This particular
problem appears to be Outlook-wide, not just the Contacts. Seems there
should be an easy fix for it but I can't figure it out.

[MVP-Outlook]
I have two problems that appear to be related. First, when I
click
on
the
address icon in Outlook 2003 I get an error message that the
Address
List
could not be displayed and the Contacts folder cannot be
opened
because
it
has been moved, deleted, or I don't have permissions. If I
click
on
the
Contact tab, however, I do go to the (empty) Contacts folder
(it
is
empty
because I haven't put anything in it yet, which leads to the
real
problem).
Second, when I try to import a Contacts list (from the
Contacts
list
of
another computer) I get all the way to the 'import location'
window
of
the
wizard and it doesn't give me a choice for where to import
to...no
browse,
etc. The 'next' button is also grayed out. Effectively, it
stops
there
and
won't allow the import to continue. Any ideas on what could
be
the
cause?
I
had imported my mail messages from a backed up Outlook file
previously
(successfully) and wonder if that did something to the
Contacts
list??
Thanks.

I did set the right destination. I'm confused by the short answers. Perhaps
you anticipate a higer level of Outlook expertise than I possess? I simply
followed the import wizard and as I said it worked...the addresses are all
there. The issue that remains existed before all of this and it applies to
all Outlook folders -- which as I said are duplicated (the entire personal
folders are duplicated except when I go to folder view, then there is only
one copy of each folder.) I wish I new the microsoft terminology to make this
more clear. Maybe I should enter another question separate from this thread?
Let me know if you think that might work. I'm sure there is a simple fix
for this but I'm not enough of an Outlook expert to know the answer. As I
said, this current problem is, I believe, only tangentially related to the
initial problem.

Yes, I did import the CSV file. That's how I got the addresses into the
Contacts list. As I said, that part seems to have worked. The problem at
this point is that each folder in Outlook now appears twice (the contents
of
the folder is not duplicated, just the designation of the folder). It's
not
a huge problem I guess but it shouldn't be doing that. This particular
problem appears to be Outlook-wide, not just the Contacts. Seems there
should be an easy fix for it but I can't figure it out.

The good news is that I was able to import the list and when I click on
the
address book icon I can see the Contact list. The bad news is that it
seems
every folder is duplicated (every mail folder, contacts, calendar,
etc.)
Not
sure how that happened (it happened before all of this) nor how to
resolve
it. It won't allow me to simply delete folders. Any ideas?

:

Use Folder list view. If you do not have more than one Contacts Folder
in
your profile, then remove the invalid reference to one here:
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address
books > Outlook Address Book > Change.

No idea . The only thing I can think of is that when I restored my
e-mail
messages it also restored or added an empty Contacts folder?I don't
know
how
to check what I have in my "profile" -- if you can tell me how to
check
I
can
let you know . Also, if I need to remove the reference please let
me
know
how I can do that as well . Thanks, Russ.

:

Why do you have more than one reference to a Contacts Folder in the
Outlook
Address Book? Do you have more than one Contacts Folder in your
profile?
If
not, remove the invalid reference.

Russ, thanks for the information. I appear to be configured
correctly,
however, when I checked the configuration there were two folders,
"Contacts"
and "Contacts in Personal Folders" -- both of which looked like
they
were
configured and named "Contacts." Maybe that is part of the
problem?
When
I
say "Contact List" I'm simply using the language I see in
Outlook.
On
the
left sidebar of Outlook (at the bottom) I have four selections -
Mail/Calendar/Contacts/Notes - that is the Contacts that I'm
referring
to.
I
don't understand the difference I guess between Contacts and an
Address
Book.
Seems to me they should be one in the same. Regarding
format...I'm
trying
to import a CSV file. I don't think that will be a problem if I
can
get
past
the current issue that Outlook seems to be having with the
Contacts
folders
that are present...even though they are empty. Whatever help you
can
provide
will be much appreciated. Thanks, Russ.

So now you're telling me that your problem is that you have an entirely
duplicated set of Personal Folders and that that existed even before you did
the import?
The problem is not short answers. It is unclear, inaccurate questions.
You have a corrupt Outlook profile most likely from migrating Outlook data
incorrectly at an earlier time Create a new Outlook profile from scratch.
Make sure you know the name and location of the Outlook data file you are
using now so you can set the new profile to use it.
