Recently I have been unable to put my machine into hibernate. I get a
message "insufficient system resources" which I never had before, in fact
I have recently increased the RAM on the computer from 512kb to 1.5Mb.

PC is a Dell 4600 with XP Pro, I am logged in with full admin rights. Any
ideas..? Apart from the memory upgrade, the only recent change I have made
is to require the Ctrl-Alt-Delete combination on boot and return from
standby.

Hibernation doesn't use RAM, it uses a file, HIBERFIL.SYS, in the root of the
C: drive. This file has to be big enough to hold the RAM contents, so adding
more RAM will actually place a greater burden on the hibernation process,
not less.

It may be that there is insufficient space for this file to be created, or
it may be that an old, corrupt copy is preventing a new one being written.
The file is readonly and hidden'ssytem, so you need to remove these
attributes to see it. It's quite OK to delete the file while Windows is
running.

Thanks, I'll check that out. There is plenty of space on the drive (over
40GB free) so it may be corrupted. I'll have a look.

Can't delete the file, it says sharing violation. If I reboot, the option
to hibernate comes back, but when I select it I get the error message
again.
