Hi everyone,

I think my problem should be considered security or adminstration. (if not
let me know.. I am also posting this same message on the General section.)

As the title said, I can't go to "Add/Remove Program" in Control Panel.
I am the owner and have admin. rights to it. However, I can't do it.
I double click on it. no response. it was prefectly ok for the past 5
months.
Then, the next morning I try to use it. IT doesn't work. Not only that,
some programs do not run also. AND I can't install or uninstall new
software.

SO.... I used the most popular way to solve this problem at first. Which is
to reinstall the whole OS. Which I did. After the installation,
everything works great. Then, it doesn't work anymore. I just finished
installing the OS and one application. So... I don't know what going to.
(I did do ll the SP1 update)

However, I do notice that while I was installing or waiting for some apps.
to install, the "network" icon on the taskbar was flashing or stay on for a
long time.
As if it was using the internet/network. So, I thought may be I had vrius
or worms. But my virus program couldn't find any. I am clueless and
helpless now.
Would someone please help me or point me to the right direction?

Thanks in advance.

SIncerely

Hi MowGreen,

Thank you very much for your reply.
The links are useful. It shows only 1 virus found.
I have never used Panda software before, it seems pretty good.

However, the probelm about not able to go to Add/Remove Program still exist.
And how does Panda Software compare to other famous software company like
Trendmicro, McAfee and Norton? They also
have online scan too... or retail version.

Thanks again for your reply.

Could you please state which virus was found and if it was
removed from your system ?

Panda Titianium is a fine and reasonably priced AV :
This page has some reviews although it has not been
updated in awhile :
http://www.wilders.org/anti_viruses.htm

NOD32 is also a fine AV, more thorough than Panda, but
also more expensive. Kapersky, IMHO, is the best AV on the
market AND the most expensive. They update their virus
definitions continually, so there is sometimes an update
every 3 hours. Impressive, but costly. The point is not to
be cheap with the AV you purchase if you value your system.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your reply.
but I think my situation got worse. I still can't go to te "add/remove
program" .
However, I did notice there was a performace decrease again.
So, I check to see if my drive has a lot of "fragment"..
it wasn't bad, it didn't recommend me to defrag, but I still did.

However, after the drag, the situation got worse... programs takes forever
to low.. and there is an error about "data reluntacy". so I didn't disk
check.
it shows a lot of "File record segament 12346 unreadable"... and a lot
others record semgment are readable.
so.. I have to reformat my system...

After scanning for virus, the computer move very slow, so I defragment the
drive.
