I have tried at least 8 times to set up Mail and it is not recognizing the
server for incoming & outgoing mail. I spoke to my ISP support group and
they cannot figure it out either. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Help.....

Tell us the server name and show us the full error messages if any.

If the internet wizard does not appear; go in tools click on accounts; add
new mail;
for Pop 3 type incoming: mail.yourisp.net (com) and smpt: the same as
address as incoming. You may have to delete the account you already have
listed. Hope this helps. If not let me know you may have to go to Control
Panel; click on classic view and repair from there.

This is the error message I get:
Account: 'POP3 (1)', Server: 'POP-server.tampabay.rr.com', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR invalid user name or password.', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

My ISP (Roadrunner) said to use POP-server.tampaby.rr.com &
SMTP-server.tampabay.rr.com in order to get Windows Mail to work, but it
doesn't. Microsoft doesn't seem to be willing to help and my new computer
(Acer) - their support team doesn't know enought about Vista to help either.

Does this help?

Thanks for answering, but that did not work either. How would I repair it
from the Control Panel?

Barbara
For your POP3 Server are you typing in ONLY tampabay.rr.com or are you
typing in POP-server.tampabay.rr.com
If you are typing in the second, remove and type in the first
(tampabay.rr.com). Same for SMPT server

That error message says nothing about not recognizing the servers.

Incidentally, Acer is giving you the run-around because the settings
for Windows Mail are identical to those for Outlook Express.
The POP3 protocol has not changed.

What the error message does say is that the server does not like
the username/password credentials you have supplied. If you are
sure that those are correct, then something else is corrupting the
username/password. That 'something else' is likely to be your
antivirus program.

Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
or Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, reboot,
then try Windows Mail again. If you still get the same error,
delete that email account, restart Windows Mail, then re-
create that account.

At your convenience, download and install a more compatible
antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Hi,
Just tried that too and it didn't work..............this is driving me
crazy. Any other ideas? Thanks

I don't know about you Barbara, but Thunderbird is starting to look like a
good mail tool to me. This Vista mail tool is impossible to set up .

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled

If you have trouble with WM, you're likely to have trouble with TB...
The setting up of your email account is the same in both programs. You just
need to know the server names, and any other settings required by your email
provider.

I use Thunderbird 2.0, Windows Mail, and Windows Live Mail.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions - nothing seems to be working right.
I'm going to call my ISP again and if that doesn't work mu daughter in law's
father is a computer guru so I'll try & get in touch with him. Thanks again

Barbara, you never responded to my question about which antivirus
program you are running. Some are not compatible with Windows Mail.
