Cannot get server to join domain

I have a W2K DC and I am trying to add another server. I
have tried W2k3 and W2k. Both give me an error. When I
try to run DCPROMO I get "the wizard cannot gain access
to the list of domian in the forest. The error is: the
network address is invalid". When I just try to join the
domain it says "the network name cannot be found", I also
cannot map a drive to my other server saying "the network
path ... could not be found". I can map a drive from a
pc and the DC to the new server and from the new server
to my pc but not the DC. I can ping by name, FQD and ip.
Thanks

Mike

Do you mean that you can ping the existing DC from the
new one by FQD? If not, it sounds like you do not have
the new DC pointing to the existing domain's DNS server.
I'm guessing that you have DNS installed on the new
server and it's pointing to itself for DNS resolution.
That seems to be a common mistake.

Adding a Win2k DC should not ber a problem if the DCs records are properly
registered in DNS you can run netdiag /v to test for that.
There are some points you must remember, 1. the current DC must be using
*ONLY* its _own_ IP address for DNS. 2. The machine you are adding as a DC
should first be added as a member first and it must also be using the first
DC for DNS *ONLY*.

Adding a Win2k3 as a DC to an existing Win2k forest requires that you run
adprep /forestprep on the Schema Master and adprep /domainprep on the
infrastructure master. If you only have one DC then both FSMO roles if not
all five FSMO roles would be on one DC.
These commands must complete without errors, if you have errors you must fix
the errors before you can continue. The complete process is described in
this KB read it carefully. I would highly suggest that you have at least two
Win2k DCs for this forest and domain in case something goes really wrong, so
you can seize all five FSMO roles and recover your forest.

I can ping the DC's ip, FQDN and Netbios name from the
new server. The DC and new server only have the DC's DNS
ip setup. I can also see the domain in network
neighborhood, but it can't get in to see the DC.

So I should add the new server as a member or member
server? They both have only the DC's DNS ip setup. I
have added then new server as a A record in DNS.

As for W2K3, I only did the adprep /domainprep w/no
errors. I will try the forestprep.

I'm not sure how this is going to work now, keep us posted, you were
supposed to run adprep /forestprep on the schema master.
You have already ran adprep /domainprep so you may not be able to add a
Win2k DC. Is this a test enviornment?

Keep us posted on how this turns out.

Yes this is a test env. I do everything at home before I
do it at work. I ran /forestprep and it said that it was
already run. So I must have done both. I guess I will
upgrade that server and see if I can W2K3 to go in. if
not, I guess I start from scratch, or ??? it is funny
how I can't map a drive or see the domain, but my pc can.
