on ibm thinkpad laptop 380 ... and occasionally get: exception oe
0028:c001539a in vxd--- . it has the original windows 98 with fat16.

i recently installed a backpack cd-rw and canon bjc-2100 and then this
started. it shows the windows 98 screen and then goes to the "windows
did not shut down properly" and you must boot into safe mode.

i tried ultimate boot disk but it will not recognize it. i also tried
to install win98se but did not have enough disk space.

i really do not want to have to lose everything as I have tax returns
to finish before April 15th! All my data
is on this computer and I have no way to save or transfer it to other
media.

any ideas?

thank you in adavance,
john

ps. i also ran ibm's tests and everything showed okay.

also tried changing booting order but that did nothing.

is there anyway i can transfer the data onto another computer via usb
cable or?

i really need the tax data and have no idea of how to access or
retrieve it to use.

It's unclear from your description: Can you boot into "safe mode"? (You
don't need a book disk/disc to do that.)

no i only get to the prompts and when i press "safe mode" it starts
over and comes to the same error and to "start in safe mode".

thank you,
john

How did you boot the Win98se installer?

i think i looked on the cd and used setup.exe.

I would take another stab at trying to build a boot disk. You can start
here:

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

If you can boot with a disk that will allow you to see the entirety of
your C: drive, that would be a good start.

How much data do you need to recover? Would it be too much to shuttle
out on floppy disks?

vxd are virtual device drivers. In Win98 these vxd errors often are
caused by loading a vxd device driver before that device is ready to be
started. The CD rom drive comes immediately to mind. Disconnect all
peripherals including the printer and cd-rom. See if then safe mode is
accessible. You might also try booting to BIOS setup and restoring
default settings.

F8 bootup/Command prompt only and type
scanreg/restore and choose an older .cab file backup. You may get
lucky.

tried restore older cab files but too many recent ones.

dissconnected all peripherals. no safe mode yet!

too many files to copy to floppies.

really think it is something easy but don't know what to do to get into
winows.

bootdisk had no tools that i know how to use.

thank you,
john

p.s. i do not know how or what programs to delete from c:\ to make room
to install win98se...it might install if i had enough room.

am not that good with dos commands and do not want to make situation/s
worse!

any help?

Are you getting any messages on the boot screen like a corrupt DLL? If
you can't bring up the SAFE MODE by hitting F8 then the system is
probably screwed. Been awhile since running Win9X, but you may have to
do a format C: and re-install windows.

How are you even managing to get to a command prompt?

it reboots to the "windows did not shutdown properly" and you must
start in safe mode...but it will not go into safe mode...but i can pick
"command prompt only".

what should i say yes or no to when step by step confirmation booting?

perhaps that might work?

or what programs and how can i delete them from the c: prompt to make
space to reinstall/overinstall win98se?

Don't let it process any of the device drivers, as that seems to be the
problem. If you can get it to load, uninstall anything you installed to
get teh CD-RW and the printer to work, and physically disconnect them.

Your system seems to be screwed up enough that a reformat and an install
would be advised. How much stuff do you have to backup? Do you have a
home network? Do you have a broadband connection?

Please quote from whatever you are replying to. See my sig line
below for how, if you insist on using the broken google interface.

If you can get to a command prompt you probably have all you need
to move your critical files. Get and use a program such as Telix
or ProComm in DOS to move the files off via the serial port. You
can receive them on another machine using HyperTerm, and the Zmodem
protocol at 115 kBaud. Once you have your critical files saved you
can now worry about the rest of it. It certainly sounds as if the
file system is still healthy. The moving may be fairly slow, but
it won't require other bloated things to be installed.

If you have a second hard disk on your machine you could get and
use xxcopy, from www.xxcopy.com (free) from the command line
prompt. That would be much faster. If you don't have it, don't
try to install one while the system is screwed up.

Here's what I would do.
Get a boot floppy with Cdrom disk support,
http://www.bootdisk.com
or on another system burn this bootable Cdrom ISO which can be used as
an,"A" prompt floppy,
http://www.geocities.com/sheppola/bootd.zip
Readme included e.g set boot order in the BIOS to Cdrom disk 1st.
Then copy the Win98 folder off your Window's CD to the hard drive
using dos.Then re-run setup.exe as per,
http://www.geocities.com/sheppola/repair.html

This should repair windows enough for you to get going etc.
