Cannot get ANY sound card to work

Not the Realtek AC97 one on the motherboard, nor a USB-attached
Creative box.

The same happens in both the main win2k install and also in a
bare-bones win2k install on the same PC.

The motherboard one (which worked previously) fails with Code 10 (half
of the Google database is connected with Code 10 errors :)).

What in win2k could prevent ANY sound system working?

I will try a PCI sound card next...

did you get any errors when you installed the drivers?
are there any conflicts in device manager?

No, I have tried both installing them from the CD (this can't be done
with the device disabled in the BIOS, as some suggest, because the
install prog checks for the presence of the hardware) and by offering
the CD to the win2k "new device found" prompt. No errors.

None I can see. The only dud device is the AC97 sound system, with
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)" and it does not use any
resources "because it has a problem".

What concerns me is that the Creative USB Extigy solution failed also;
with a similar problem.

Under control panel -> computer management (local) -> system tools ->
event viewer -> application

I get two warnings:

WMI ADAP was unable to retrieve data from the PerfLib localization
subkey: , error code: 0x2 event ID 46

and right after that

WMI ADAP was unable to process the performance libraries: 0x80041001
event ID 60

and that's all I can see.

It turns out I get the same error messages if I uninstall the AC97
drivers and disable the AC97 sound in the BIOS, so they are probably
not related.
