Cannot find server

I have IE 6 installed on my system and cannot get it to
connect to the Internet. When I open IE it sits with a wait
symbol for the longest time and then I get a "Cannot find
server" error. I get my POP3 mail just fine and I am
connecting to the Internet with Opera 7.2 also. I have
checked with my ISP and they have run tests on my system
and theirs and found everything working as expected. I have
done a CMD/ipconfig /release and renew without problems. I
have checked device manager for my network card and found
it. When I go to Control Panel/Network Connections the
folder is empty - no icons for the network connections. In
fact I get an error window that states "The Network
Connections folder was unable to retrieve the list of
network adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the
Network Connections service is enabled and running." Don't
know where I would find the "Network Connections service"
so I could check it do you? I have tried to uninstall
Internet Explorer using the Add/Remove folder, no luck. I
tried using an Uninstaller program, no luck. I went through
the Registry and removed all mention of Internet Explorer
then attempted to install IE 6 SP1, that didn't work
either. Did a System Restore to get everything back to
where it was. From all indications I now have to shut down
Zone Alarm Pro to get even Opera to work. Can someone help.
I would like to do a Windows Update.

I just recently installed DSL on my Windows ME, and could
not get any web pages.. message "Page could not be
displayed" .. tech support for Sympatico (my ISP) could not
figure it out, we went through everything possible. In
doing my own research on Microsoft help pages, it sounds
like IE6 has many problems and especially with systems
other than XP.. I will try to find a patch or get an
updated version of IE6, but it sounds like I might have to
go back to IE5, which doesn't look like it will be easy
either. This is so maddening!!! Why does everything have
to be so complicated!!
