System Windows 2000 Pro

DSL connection, Private IP behind ISP firewall

Like many people I have been having a problem of not being
able to load a webpage. The page in question has been my
home page for a couple years, and suddenly about two weeks
ago I found I could not load the page.

I have checked my computer using Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot and
everything seems to be clean. I also have Norton Anti-
virus 2003 running.

My ISP told me that since I was behind their firewall and
had a private IP the site could be blocking access. The
forum webmaster told me they do not block IPs. After
reading all the posts from people with the same problem
I'm thinking this not the case, but something else is the
problem.

I also cannot set a home page via Tools_Internet
Options_General tab. The whole section is greyed out. I
looked in the registry and the default was as follows:

Default - Reg-SZ - value not set.

It seems that there should be a value set, but I don't
know what it should be.

I also completely deinstalled IE6.0 so that I was back to
IE 5.0, the version on my W2K CD, and then downloaded IE 6
SP1. Still no change.

Short of formatting the HD and starting from scratch,
anyone have any suggestions?

I find it frustrating that Microsoft does not offer online
support IE and Outlook Express.

In my original message I stated that I've run Ad Aware and
Spy Bot, and the only thing that comes up consistently is
the Alexa software, and that seems to be placed on the
computer continually. Spybot removes it and it's back.

How about the 'no value' in the registry for the home
page? Any suggestions on how to address that, short of
reinstalling W2K, but since I've already removed and
reinstalled IE6 I don't hold much hope for that.

Are there any Microsoft techs monitoring this board? Any
suggestions. I do feel that it may involve some recent
updates for Microsoft. They don't provide fixes, but only
suggest that one contacts Microsoft for help.

Carol,
As stated on the page .........
"Ad-Aware or SpyBot can no longer completely removed these new parasites"
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

That why the suggestion to follow-up with HijackThis.

I had a similar problem on 2 computers for months. I
finally received instructions from Microsoft to run a
search for a file named "hosts" (no quotes). If you do
find it in the cab/driver folder, either change the name
or delete it. I found the rascal on both computers,
deleted it, and was immediately back in business, no re-
boot. It still appears from time to time on my home
computer - I have not found out what puts it there. Hope
this helps.

Some parasite will create the file. Also Web accelerator programs will use
it.

There's a good possibility that this is being caused by a third-party
program (adware, spyware, parasite).
