I have been experiencing a problem in which client PCs get a "Cannot
find server or DNS error" error page in Internet Explorer. I believe
the problem is related to the problem described in kb831167.

I have downloaded the patch from kb831167 but it won't install
properly. I have tried it on three machines.

On the first machine, it seemed to think I'd got a customised version
of IE (which is possible) and the install went through but then
complained at the end, and it has left the version of IE unchanged. On
the other two machines, it said it wouldn't install - with the
following message "This update requires Internet Explorer 6.0 Service
Pack 1 to be installed". On these two machines, IE 6.0 SP1 is already
installed! :-<

Is anyone aware of any problems with this patch? Is there a later
version that I could apply instead?

Cheers,

Windows version(s) of the problem machines?
...."This update requires Internet Explorer 6.0 Service
Pack 1 to be installed".

This is Microsoft's foggy way of stating that a more-recent version of
WININET.DLL is already installed. (831167 gives you v6.0.2800.1405, dated
Feb-04; 896688 gives you v6.0.2800.1511 or 1512 in WinXP SP1 and Win2K.)

Short version: WININET.DLL isn't the cause of your problem; Hijackware
usually is.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
